Coitus is a systematic, quasi-botanical mapping of the shadow world of the domestic flora. Tim Otto Roth relates with that shadow herbarium to the tradition of the nature print and to works like the cyanotypes from the botanist Anna Atkins. But Roth even radicalizes the aspect of touching. Capturing the shadows on highly sensitive slide film is a quite tactile affair, because the plants need to be exposed on the film in absolute darkness. A photogrammatic innovation is to bring the exposing light in direct touch with the plants or to bend sheet film around the flowers, stems or leaves.

Coitus ist eine systematische, an die Botanik angelegte Kartierung der Schattenwelt der heimischen Flora. Tim Otto Roth knüpft bei diesem Schattenherbarium an die Tradition des Naturselbstdrucks oder an Arbeiten wie der Botanikerin Anna Atkins an. Roth radikalisiert aber den Aspekt der Berührung weiter. Seine Arbeiten sind zuvorderst ertastet. Da er die Schatten der Pflanzen auf hochempfindlichem Diafilm festhält, muß er in völliger Dunkelheit die Pflanzen auf dem Filmmaterial exponieren. Neu an seinem Vorgehen ist dabei, daß er bei vielen Motiven das Licht direkt an die Pflanzen ansetzt oder den lichtempfindlichen Filme nicht plan beläßt, sondern um das Motiv schmiegt.

In Coitus light doesn’t act anymore from a distant point, but gets in touch with nature. Much of this plant shadow pictures echo a particular amalgam of light, flower and light sensitive surface. The intimacy of that interwoven encounter is even reinforced by the enlargement of the resulting slides.

At the first glance the title Coitus just hints at the pornographic connotation of the flower motive. In fact it emphasizes the coition (lat. coitus), the fusion of the floral sexual apparatus with light and light sensitive surface.

Das Licht agiert in Coitus also nicht mehr aus einem Abstand heraus, sondern geht in Tuchfühlung mit der Flora. In vielen dieser pflanzlichen Schattenbilder hallt somit ein eigenartiges Amalgam aus Licht, Blüte und lichtempfindlicher Oberfläche wieder, ein Zusammentreffen und Ineinandergehen, dessen intime Berührtheit durch die Vergrößerung noch verstärkt wird. Nur auf den ersten Blick verweist der Titel Coitus also auf den tendenziell pornographischen Charakter des Blumenmotivs. Vielmehr unterstreicht er das Ineinandergehen (lat. coitus), das Verschmelzen des floralen Geschlechtsapparat mit Licht und lichtempfindlicher Oberfläche.
