Es fehlt die Angemessenheit der Mittel . Gesangsverbot für Chöre in Berlin

by Maria Ossowski (29 Jun 2020)
Original source: rbb24

Berlin has updated its Corona Ordinance and has banned singing in closed rooms strictly. There are no exceptions to this regulation. The regulations are to remain in force until 24 October. The choirs are annoyed because they were not informed about the new ban in advance.

Was möglich ist . Die Münchner Philharmoniker spielen wieder vor Publikum
What's possible . The Munich Philharmonic Orchestra plays again in front of an audience

by Egbert Tholl (25 Jun 2020)
Original source: Süddeutsche Zeitung

In Bavaria the hygiene rules are more restrictive than in any other federal state. Not only maximum distances between visitors in the Munich Philharmonic Hall are adhered to, but it is also not permitted to remove masks during the concert. It remains to be seen whether this is due to the "obviously most useless Minister of Art" who does not have confidence in the discipline of high culture audiences. But the 40 or so musicians under the direction of Valery Gergiev are not letting the restrictions affect them.

»Literatur ist ein Lebensmittel!« . Erste Lesungen nach der Corona-Krise
»Literature is a nutrient!« . First readings after the Corona crisis

by Börsenblatt Online (19 Jun 2020)
Original source: Börsenblatt

The first readings after the lockdown have found an enthusiastic audience, but the booksellers still want to wait until autumn before organising new readings, because from an economic point of view the events are a risk. Despite good sales figures at the book table and sold-out readings, large rooms have to be rented and the supervision of the event is personnel-intensive due to the hygiene concept.

Interne Anweisung: »Schauspieler über 60 bitte eliminieren«
Internal directive: »Please eliminate actors over 60«

by Stefan Grund (17 Jun 2020)
Original source: Welt

In the last days, a letter has become known that the production company Saxonia Media has sent to the scriptwriters of the popular series "In aller Freundschaft" commissioned by the first German national TV channel ARD. In it they were asked to use actors over 60 in a very reduced way or even not to cast them at all. After there have been only rumours up to now that production companies encourage their script writers to remove old characters, this is the first case in which such a procedure has been proven. The German association of actors 'Berufsverband Sc hauspiel" is investigating all suspicious cases, not only to clarify them, but also to warn against such action.

Das Eine-Milliarde-Euro-Baby
The One-Billion-Euro-Baby

by Dirk Peitz (05 Jun 2020)
Original source: Zeit

Dirk Peitz explores the question of how the crisis of culture in Germany can be described exactly and who is currently bearing the costs that arise in the cultural sector. The »latent lack of systemic relevance« could become a problem for the industry if the economic crisis becomes more severe or lasts longer than currently expected. While the approximately 1.7 million employees are currently an argument in favour of artists, cultural funding could be discontinued very quickly in times of tight budgets.

»Es gab keine Kommunikation zwischen Theater und Politik« . Öffnung von Theatern und Opernhäusern
»There was no communication between theatre and politics« . Opening ot theatres and opera houses

by Barbara Behrendt, Michael Schmitz-Aufterbeck (31 May 2020)
Original source: Deutschlandfunk

Around 30 employees at the Aachen Theater had Covid 19 in March. Even though the state government of NRW allows the theaters to reopen on May 31, a regular program will only be played in Aachen in compliance with the hygiene rules at the beginning of the new season. Then only smaller productions will be shown in front of a significantly reduced audience.
The general director Michael Schmitz-Aufterbeck is irritated in the conversation that the politicians have not previously sought a dialogue with the persons engaged in the cultural sector. He describes in great de tail the difficulty of implementing the requirements for his employees, as the rooms are particularly limited on back stage and are sometimes very narrow.

Überraschung oder Enttäuschung . Was steckt drin im Kulturpaket?
Surprise or disappointment? . What comprises the stimulus package for culture?

by Felicitas Twickel (29 May 2020)
Original source: Aspekte

In the coming week, the German federal government is to adopt an economic stimulus package for the cultural and creative industries. The hopes for support are high. Felicitas Twickel spoke to representatives of the industry who were particularly affected by the pandemic. In addition to the organizers of festivals, which will lose all income in 2020 without replacement, the freelancers in particular are affected by the crisis. If it is not possible to promote them with the announced cultural package, then the diversity of culture and music in Germany is in peril.

In Zeiten der Abstandsästhetik . Theater unter Corona-Bedingungen
In times of distance aesthetics . Theatre under corona conditions

by Stefan Grund (26 May 2020)
Original source: Welt

In Hamburg, the theatres are currently not yet allowed to reopen. However, in preparation for the new season, the Deutsches Schauspielhaus and the Thalia Theater have resumed rehearsals. Here, too, the rules of hygiene are strictly observed. This has an impact on the plays, in which more distance must now be maintained between the actors. Jan Bosse, director at the Thalia Theater, understands the alienation, which he did not choose himself, as an aesthetic challenge, which produces new solutions during rehearsals. These are also understood by the audience, since everyone can understand and interpret the collective narrative Corona. As an unique experience, he considers the Corona conditions as a challenge. However, the rules of hygiene should not be set in the long run, because especially the distance on stage can quickly lead to boredom.

Kultur-Sofortprogramm: »Das reicht nicht aus«
Immediate Action Program for Culture: »This is not sufficient«

by Olaf Zimmermann, Jürgen Deppe (25 May 2020)
Original source: NDR Kultur

For small and medium-sized cultural institutions, the resumption of their program in compliance with the rules of hygiene entails expenditures. For this purpose, support can be applied for from the "Neustart" emergency program launched by the federal Ministers of State for Cultur, Monika Grütters. Last week, Grütters announced that the originally budgeted funds had to be doubled because of the high demand. Olaf Zimmermann welcomes this initiative of the Ministers of State for Culture and the gradual return to normality in the cultural sector, but also points out in an interview with the NRD that this program is not sufficient. On the one hand, it merely involves reallocated funds from the State Minister of Culture's budget that are currently not needed elsewhere, but on the other hand it also requires a specific culture pool to support the industry. Here he sees the federal government as having a duty. In the individual German states, the freelance artists have received support in very different ways, but this support will expire at the end of June. Here it is urgently required to think about new concepts, because the crisis is far from over for the cultural sector.
