The situation in the cultural sector has been described and discussed in numerous interviews, corona diaries, comments and reports in the past few weeks. Our annotated collection of currently 193 sources gathers voices from different sectors and media. This creates a picture of the cultural landscape in crisis, whose temporal transformation can be explored interactively via a dedicated tag cloud.

It can only be out of desperation that musicians the Corona crisis give away their work on the Internet - at least that's how Herlmut Mauró interprets it in his commentary in the Süddeutsche Zeitung. In doing so, they not only degrade themselves - Mauró feels reminded of former conductors who stood at the podium not in tailcoats but in their employer's service uniform - but can lend little weight to their demand for state support. After all, our economic system determines the value of a performance by its remuneration. And so it is only a logical consequence that within the framework of the Corona aid programme, an old support programme has been rededicated and now, above all, new forms of presentation of music are being promoted rather than the work of freelance musicians, ensembles and orchestras.

The initial easing of the situation towards a normal everyday life allows the citizens in Germany to breathe a sigh of relief. But that does not apply to the cultural sector. In the »name of epidemiological reason« culture is being squeezed all the breath out. With this image, Andreas Kilb illustrates very impressively the situation in the creative industry since the start of the lockdown and fears that many will not survive the stranglehold for much longer.

All concerts are cancelled, but the orchestras want to play and consequently relocate their concerts to the net. The helplessness of the organisers can be seen on these online presentations, however, and Simon Rattle sums it up at the concert of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra: At a time when people have to keep their distance, you want to give comfort with music. Nevertheless, the excellent range of concerts on offer should not hide the fact that musicians and ensembles find themselves in a situation that threatens their very existence.

With the beginning of the corona crisis, concerts were canceled worldwide and cultural institutions had to close. This does not prevent orchestras and ensembles from playing. Streaming live from concert halls and living rooms worldwide. That doesn't just apply to classical music. For example, the Italian singer Gianna Nannini surprised her fans with a house concert as a measure against corona loneliness.
The situation is unique. Even Geoffry Wharton, who has worked as concertmaster with the Gürzenich Orchestra in Cologne for 30 years, cannot remember a co mparable wave of concert cancellations. In this situation, he is particularly worried about his freelance colleagues, who cannot survive such a wave of cancellations economically for long.

Facing arts is a projet by STORM.

STORM is an acronym playing with the initials by Miriam Seidler & Tim Otto Roth, who are hit both by the Corona crisis. Dr. Miriam Seidler is a scholar in German literature and currently works as specialist in public relations. Dr. Tim Otto Roth is a scholar in art and science history and works as a conceptual artist and composer. He is known for his huge projects in public space, cooperations with leading scientific institutions and his immersive sound and light installations. Miriam and Tim collaborate regularly for years. With facing arts they reaslize their first common art project.
